As the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, my work is dedicated to measuring and understanding what improves people's wellbeing and overall quality of life. We're based in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, one of the countries that is consistently ranked the happiest in the world. As someone who was born and raised in Denmark, I'm often asked about what makes Danish people so content. If you want an indication of how we approach life and think about happiness here, you can find the answer in these three phrases we use every day. 'There is no such thing as bad weather — only bad clothing'This is an old Danish expression without any clear origin.

CNN —The UN World Happiness Report released last week ranked Denmark the world’s second happiest country for a sixth consecutive year. But that would mean you probably don’t understand the Danish way of thinking. The Happiness Report then takes an average of the numbers given by those surveyed in each nation across the last three years. An 80-year old Danish relative of mine thinks it’s why the older generation came out on top in this year’s happiness report. As much as January is a time for self-improvement, it can also be tough to stay motivated as the dead of winter sets in. Hygge can be practiced year-round to provide a serotonin boost through socializing, feeling sheltered and secure, enjoying indulgent foods and prioritizing rest. But it's something of a "survival strategy" in winter, says Wiking, who wrote the New York Times bestseller "The Little Book of Hygge." To that end, here are his three tips for harnessing hygge to stay happy and motivated despite the dreary winter season. Since then, he's made it a practice to get outside for an hour of daylight, even in winter.

A hundred times I have been told that LED bulbs, with their unnatural froideur and their sour green aura, can now simulate all manner of glow. They come with labels like soft white and bright white, cool white and daylight. and the waiting room in the E.R. I’m hardly the first person to notice that LED light simply looks bad. I associate that jolly warmth with late-night phone calls, books read after bedtime, the privacy of my own well-lit room.

Brigid Berlin, a fixture of the downtown art world in the ’60s and ’70s, will be forever associated with Andy Warhol — the Factory superstar played Duchess, a version of herself as a lesbian drug dealer, in Warhol and Paul Morrissey’s 1966 film “Chelsea Girls” — but three years after her death in 2020, a new exhibition considers Berlin’s art in its own right. “Brigid really was an innovator when you think of the way she used persona as a medium,” says Alison M. Gingeras, who has curated “Brigid Berlin: The Heaviest,” at New York’s Vito Schnabel Gallery, which examines the artist’s life, from her tony uptown upbringing to her secluded later life, with the wild times in between. “For too long she has been pushed into the footnotes.” In a room that features the same wallpaper as Berlin’s Murray Hill apartment, visitors can peruse photos and letters from her childhood. “Brigid Berlin: The Heaviest,” is on view through Aug. 18, vitoschnabel.com. Meghan Markle’s Neutral Cashmere Is ‘Power Casual’
  + stars: | 2022-12-17 | by ( Rory Satran | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
When Meghan Markle first rose to minor celebrity on the show “Suits,” she was wearing the buttoned-up wardrobe of a young lawyer: pencil skirts, strict button-ups and yes, suits. When she then reached unimaginable heights of global fame as Prince Harry ‘s girlfriend and then wife, she dressed impeccably for the endless public appearances in coat dresses, high-heeled pumps and even fascinators. With her upright daughter-of-a-yoga-teacher posture and seemingly endless supply of camel wrap coats, she has, until recently, dressed for a relentlessly public life. But in the six-part series “Harry & Meghan,” currently the number-two show on Netflix in the U.S., the duchess of Sussex presents a cozier, quieter, more intimate style. Ms. Markle’s message appears to be: I am grounded, sincere, and down-to-earth, but refined.
